Just done with a wedding painting for my very best friend. I've been working on this for nearly 2 weeks (part time, of course). Since it's my very first try-out of digital painting, can't help to showing off.

Yan is my very best friend in China, and a person who has saved my life by taking me to emergency room when she found out I was severely sick. Even though it has been 3 years since I graduated from college, I can never forget the friendship that she offered. Although I can't go back for her day, I wish her a wedding day that full of joy, and an enriching marriage afterwards. <3

So, here is the group picture of my workshop friends. It is the first day of summer break and I've already felt so lonely on campus. :(

But anyway, I did this drawing in order to warm up myself of 2 weeks of laziness. Now it is the time to start my summer plan.

First draft of "Dispatch"

So, it has been a while since my last update. Recently I was busy in finishing my C film "Dispatch". Two crazy good artists, Peng and Yuxin, worked closely with me and brought the original concept to life. It was a great learning experiences.

Since there was a hell lot to do, I was running out of time so the film was shown in black and white with limited color. It was first shown at UCLA Animation Prom and won a prize. But still I am going to color it and redo some animation to make it qualify for animation festival. Hopefully it will be finished in summer.

Prom was very successful and it probably is one of the best throughout its history (from what I've heard). I am very very proud of my workshop friends, especially my talented and hard-working first-years. You guys have a great sense of humor, a strong willingness to help and a pure heart that 100% commit to animation and storytelling. Can't wait to work with you guys on our next project.

Stepping into the field of animation was really an accident. I was so unconfident of my drawing and animation when I first came to the class. But after finishing my first year in workshop I am pretty sure that I belong to this imaginary world.

This is a film for Falling Lizard Weekend 2011 at UCLA Animation workshop, as part of the group project.
I worked on this clip for about 15 hrs. It is like 5 hours of animating, 5 hours of inking and 5 hours trying to figure out what's going on with After Effect and how can i composite the stuff in a way that i want.
The down-shooter is a bit depressing because it cannot keep the noise out of my images. I gave up the idea of cleaning it up. I will try scanner later.
And of course, I have to restore my computer in order to keep it running in the following month. I do need a new computer but still it is better not to make hi-tech a big deal within these 3 month isn't it?

The Ancient Greek aphorism "Know yourself", Greek: γνῶθι σεαυτόν gnōthi seauton (also ... σαυτόν ... sauton with the ε contracted), was inscribed in the pronaos (forecourt) of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi - according to the Greek periegetic (travelogue) writer Pausanias (10.24.1).
Other sources attribute it to Phemonoe, a mythical Greek poetess. In a discussion of moderation and self-awareness, the Roman poet Juvenal quotes the phrase in Greek and states that the precept descended de caelo (from heaven) (Satire 11.27).

The saying "Know thyself" may refer by extension to the ideal of understanding human behavior, morals, and thought, because ultimately to understand oneself is to understand other humans as well. However, the ancient Greek philosophers thought that no man can ever comprehend the human spirit and thought thoroughly, so it would have been almost inconceivable to know oneself fully. Therefore, the saying may refer to a less ambitious ideal, such as knowing one's own habits, morals, temperament, ability to control anger, and other aspects of human behavior that we struggle with on a daily basis.

It may also have a mystical interpretation. 'Thyself', is not meant in reference to the egotist, but the ego within self, the I AM consciousness.

In Latin, the aphorism is generally given as nosce te ipsum. The Latin version of the aphorism is written on a plaque above the Oracle's door in the Matrix film series, where it is rendered in a non-traditional Latin; that is to say temet nosce ("thine own self thou must know") translated in the Matrix as know thyself.

In the true theological sense, "Know Thyself" is a fundamental tenet of the question of life's meaning. To truly 'know oneself' in this sense involves a deeply personal, spiritual transformation whereby a person would seek to orient themselves towards understanding their own phenomenological perceptions of reality, so as to gain earnest insight into aspects of one's own existence. Thus the theological sense of "Know Thyself" entails an experiential revolution of spirit in the sense of the Socratic periagoge. (See Allegory of the cave.)

This is a series of graphic designs for the first public performance of XIN-ACT-LAB. The designs include the poster, invitation (welcome card) and the playbill. The main icon of the poster is a combination of a contemporary dancer and a Chinese traditional dancer (They are acturally the same person, who is the founder of the lab). This icon symbolize the general style of this performance: mix, abstract, and improvised.
